CAVE DWELLER: A Story about Ging Nuñeza

Story by Didith T. Rodrigo

Illustrations by Gabi Mara

Olga M. Nuñeza is the former Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension and Professor of Biology at the College of Science and Mathematics’ Department of Biological Sciences of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology. She received her BS in Biology from Mindanao State University in Marawi City. She obtained her MS in Zoology and PhD in Animal Physiology from the University of the Philippines Los Baños. Dr. Nuñeza spearheads research on Mindanao’s fauna to encourage environmental protection. These projects require her to spend weeks in Mindanao’s forests, photographing, collecting, and measuring the creatures found in trees, rivers, and caves. Among her resulting publications are two books: Photographic Guide to Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, and Bats of the Caves in Mindanao, Philippines and Photographic Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles of Mindanao. Her interests have since expanded to include invertebrates such as spiders, dragonflies, and damselflies as well as the management of watersheds. Beyond data collection and reporting, Dr. Nuñeza works with local communities for the conservation of Mindanao’s natural resources. She recognizes that conservation is largely a “people issue” and therefore assists government, local leaders, and indigenous people with environmental management and administration. “Scientific knowledge,” she says, “is effective especially when communities are trained and empowered to monitor and manage their resources.”
