TREASURE FROM TRASH: A Story about Evelyn Taboada

Evelyn B. Taboada is the Dean of the College of Engineering and a professor of chemical engineering at the University of San Carlos in Cebu City, Philippines. She received her BS in Chemical Engineering (cum laude) from the University of San Carlos and an MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Philippines in Diliman. She received her advanced postgraduate degree of Master in Biotechnology and a PhD in biochemical engineering from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Because of her interest in intellectual property, she obtained a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property from the University of Torino in Italy and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Academy in Switzerland; and is a practicing patent attorney in the Philippines. Dr. Taboada holds patents for technologies related to the treatment of fruit wastes. For developing these technologies, she was conferred the WIPO’s gold medal for inventors two times. She also received the Commission on Higher Education’s Republica award in 2007 and the Ambassador Alfredo M. Yao Intellectual Property Award in 2012. In 2015, she received the Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award from the ASEAN Green Award and the Prize for Engineering Excellence from the Manila Water Foundation. To Dr. Taboada, the greatest value of the work lies in helping the poorest of the poor by giving them dignified, meaningful work. She says, “This is the only other way to break the cycle of poverty.”
