Gisela P. Concepcion is Vice-President of Academic Affairs of the University of the Philippines. In 1975, she received her BS in Chemistry (cum laude) from the University of the Philippines Diliman and ranked second in the chemistry board exams in 1976. She received her MS in Biochemistry from UP Manila in 1982 and her PhD in Chemistry from UP Diliman in 1995. Dr. Concepcion is an internationally recognized researcher and an academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology. She has won the Dr. Eusebio Y. Garcia Recognition Award for Molecular Biology and Molecular Pathology, the National Research Council of the Philippines Achievement Award in Chemistry, and the Paz and Severino Koh Lectureship Award in Science. One of her largest research undertakings is the PharmaSeas Marine Drug Discovery Program that is funded by the Philippines Department of Science and Technology and the International Cooperative Biodiversity Program on Philippine Mollusk Symbionts that is funded by the United States National Institutes for Health. Together with her national and international collaborators, Dr. Concepcion works to discover new treatments for pain, cancer, infections and other illnesses by studying the Philippines’ rich marine resources. Dr. Concepcion is popularly known for writing and managing a weekly newspaper column, Star Science, in which she showcases the work of Filipino scientists and lobbies for further investment in science research and education. She is also the founder and co-editor of the on-line, free access scientific journal International Journal of Philippine Science and Technology (formerly known as Philippine Science Letters). She constantly stresses that science, technology, research, and development are essential to the Philippines’ socio-economic progress.
