Beyond the Storm: A Story about Gemma Narisma

P120.00

Story by Didith T. Rodrigo

Illistrations by George Vincent Bien

Gemma Teresa T. Narisma is an associate professor of Physics at the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City. She also serves as the Associate Director for Research and Head of the Climate Systems Program of the Manila Observatory. She has a BS in Applied Physics and an MS in Environmental Science from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. She received her doctorate in Atmospheric Science from Macquarie University in Australia. Dr. Narisma’s research focuses on climate change and its effects on people. Climatic changes, including increase in extreme events, can have severe effects on people’s livelihoods as well as their safety. Hence, Dr. Narisma strives to gain insight on the impacts of climate change on society and to provide science-based support for climate adaptation and disaster risk management planning. Her studies go beyond the effects of any single storm or long term changes in climate trends. Rather, together with other scientists, she examines a community’s exposures and vulnerabilities and tries to help the community plan for sustainable development and disaster risk reduction. Although studying the effects of climate change can be frightening, Dr. Narisma says that instead of scaring us, climate change is an issue that “should motivate us to do our part so that we can prepare ourselves [for] the potential impacts of global warming and also [to have] a better environment to live in.” For her exceptional work, Dr. Narisma received the Outstanding Young Scientist Award for Atmospheric Science from the National Academy of Science and Technology of the Philippines in 2012. In 2013, she was named one of The Outstanding Women in Nation’s Service from the TOWNS foundation.
